Here is a huge relief for taxpayers! The Income Tax department has extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar and PAN by 4 months, i.e. till 31 December 2017. Incidentally, 31 December 2017 is also the deadline to link bank accounts with Aadhaar.
This comes at a time when the extensions were allotted for furnishing the Aadhaar to avail several social welfare benefits. Besides, petitions challenging the decisions on Aadhaar are posted for hearing in November by the Supreme Court.
The extension was made as many taxpayers were unable to link Aadhaar with PAN and lodged several complaints expressing their inability to link the two identification numbers due to differences in the names in the Aadhaar and PAN databases.
Earlier, the department has announced that the tax returns would not be processed if Aadhaar is not linked to PAN by 31 August 2017. Hence, those who filed their income tax returns (ITR) by 5 August 2017, but couldn’t link their PAN with Aadhaar, gets additional time till 31 December.
