Like most parents, I always wanted to select the best school and offer the best education to my kid. My two-and-half-year-old boy has been showing interest at games and sports, from as early as six months. So, I wanted to pick a school that gives equal importance to sports and academics.
However, I knew that it is not easy to get admission in the desired school. I have closely seen my neighbors struggle to get their kids into a school. Their struggle began with form-filling, spending heavily on the admission forms, attending interviews, and not to mention the nerve-wracking wait for the final results. After all the struggle, the end result in most cases is unfruitful, for many reasons.
It takes a lot of patience to get kids into the desired school. A lot of research and ground plan is required before beginning the process. In most cases, schools consider many factors before shortlisting the candidates. Some include the residing location of the pupil (should be within the vicinity), siblings (siblings of the existing students are preferred), parent’s education etc. Many schools also follow lottery systems for admissions. In such a scenario, parents eventually end up with trial and error method, which is alarming!
Ideally, a parent should evaluate the parameters before shortlisting the right schools. The parameters should consider kid’s needs and interests.
Analyze the areas of your child’s interests and compare it with the schools’ culture. Read through to learn more.
Choice of Curriculum
With a wide range of curriculum options available to choose from, it is important to make the right choice. Many assume that international curriculum allows kids to compete at international level. But, the curriculum should be in line with the child’s comfort level.
If your job involves inter-city or inter-state transfers, pick a suitable curriculum that could be continued from any place. Check if the curriculum would not be a pressure factor on your child. Online research and findings from parents and students studying across schools and curriculum would help to decide the suitable one.
Schools’ Credentials and Teaching Methodology
It has become a lucrative business for schools these days. A high fee structure does not necessarily mean that the school is well-equipped. Many schools claim they follow the international syllabus, but in reality, only a few IGSCE/IB schools in India are globally recognized.
So parents need to do their research on the school’s recognition, teaching methodology, teachers’ expertise by either connecting with other parents, students, or teachers. Alumni of the school also represent the school’s performance history.
Check for the commute facility, for your kid to travel with ease. Decide whether or not your child would be comfortable traveling long, up and down to school. Else, prefer the one within the vicinity.
School fees is not a one-time commitment, it keeps rising year after year. A well-informed decision has to be taken by parents when it comes to school fees, after assessing the current and expected financial status.
Ideally, parents should start investing for the child’s education well before the kid is ready for schooling and has to continue until they meet the higher education needs. Experts suggest parents be ready for at least two years of fees as balance fund at any time, to remain worry-free. Meanwhile, ensure that you do not get emotionally drawn to buy the misfit policies from many child plan policies available in the market. Take care to evaluate the right investment choices and pick a worthy child plan.
In conclusion, jot down all the requirements and identify the schools matching this list. Interact with students and parents of different schools to understand the real scenario. Simultaneously make financial preparations to help your child enjoy uninterrupted education as he grows.
